What Is Depression?
Most people have times when they feel low, lethargic, and feel they have lost the zest for life. Often, you can bounce back and lift yourself out of your mood very quickly. Nevertheless, for some people, these black days become weeks, which in turn become months and for some turn into years. Depression, as the author Dorothy Rowe so eloquently describes it, can be a “personal prison.” Depression is not simply feeling down it can alter the way you view yourself and others. Depression can be like walking through a hall of mirrors in a fairground, but instead of distorting your reflection, depression distorts the way you think about yourself and other people.
For most people they are able to reach out and ask for help when there are feeling down, for a person with depression getting through each day is a battle for survival. Although the person is not dying, they feel like they are, and every day is a never-ending struggle from minute to minute.
Added to this feeling, there is the sense of being isolated from others. One can obviously see the difference between feeling down and having depression.
How common is depression?
According to the WHO (World Health Organisation), depression is the number one mental health problem in the world today. To put this into some comparison according to the 2011 census, there are approximately 26,942 people living in the East Grinstead area (parish). Using the figures from UK mental health, approximately 9% of people in the UK,at present, suffer from depression. So to put that in some comparison, there are approximately 2,400 people, with depression in the East Grinstead area. This figure is a rough estimate, but it gives you some idea of how many people could have depression in your neighbourhood.
