Generalised anxiety disorder: A brief history

Generalised anxiety disorder or GAD, is actually not a new concept, in fact, it’s possibly been around as long as man has been on this planet. It is part of our fear response, which is located in the part of the brain called the limbic system.Anxiety-Disorder-293x300

Although anxious thoughts have plagued man, since he first stepped foot on this planet the diagnosis of anxiety disorder is relatively new. Anxiety is a bodily reaction which can be described as nervousness from being faced with the fear, which, in turn, activates the fight/ flight or freeze mechanism within the brain. Fundamentally, anxiety is when the fight /flight or freeze mechanism is malfunctioning.

The first people to recognise anxiety was the Greeks, they were to call this “hysteria”; as it was thought, at the time that only women suffered from this condition. Taken from the root word for female reproductive organs, it was first believed by the Greeks that hysteria was caused by a malfunction of the uterus.

Freud was to explore this hysteria more fully, in his studies into sexual repression, finding that hysteria was mostly based on female sexual suppression.

The American Civil War was to uncover, what we now know is PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder). Traumatised soldiers would suffer counselling for anxiety, Crawley and East Grinstead, West Sussex_05from what is called an “irritable heart” it is noteworthy to mention that one of the symptoms associated with anxiety disorder is panic attacks which often include palpitations of the heart, further symptoms are, a difficulty getting a breathing when one suffers from an attack. Doctors often treated this with opium, which addictive effects were not actually known at that point. In the 1800s anxiety was diagnosed as “weakness of the nerves” doctors would treat this with alcohol or bromide salts.

What is anxiety disorder?

Anxiety disorder is often called chronic worrying; people with this problem often say that they are anxious about everything. Frequently one the symptoms of anxiety disorder “catastrophising”; this is where anxious people will often jump to the worst possible conclusion, regarding a situation.

I started going to counselling when I started waking up, late at night, in a cold sweat. My partner told me that I needed counselling, she knew I wouldn’t take pills. Just talking about what made me anxious helped, and with Tony’s help I got to the underlying issues. The glamour came to counselling.
